Male writers often succeed in creating interesting female portraits. We all remember Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina or Flaubert’s Madame Bovary. If you want to know what kind of female has been created by Stefan Szulc, we strongly recommend his play, “A Monodrama”. You will find some decent fun while watching the Female character – rebellious and wrathful, and at the same time lost and uncertain. Her final decision to leave the Male is not certain. Having locked her partner in the basement, the Female makes the space for her private performance. We witness her most violent outbursts of anger and disappointment. The costume of this strong and determined woman is being torn into pieces when she recalls traumatic experience of her childhood. All her past choices were wrong (including the man in the basement). She is going to leave but misses the train and spends the night recalling all misfortunes of her life. The Male banging at the door becomes her unwilling audience who, as time goes by, gets more and more patient. Eventually he makes a gesture of silent understanding towards her. After having broken the door, he remains a prisoner only in a symbolical sense, as they both seem to be trapped in their prison of unsatisfactory relationship.
